Utilizing multilayer coextrusion technology, micro- and nano-layer polymer films can be fabricated in a continuous process. Various architectures can be manufactured, including (AB)n, (ABC)n, (ABCBA)n uniform and gradient multilayers, vertical multilayers, and even nanofibers. This presentation will introduce various nano-architectured multilayer films. Among various approaches for high dielectric constant and low loss polymers, the multilayer film technology is a unique approach, because it combines both advantageous extrinsic and intrinsic dielectric properties, and suppress disadvantageous dielectric properties. With tailored material choices, layer thicknesses, and interfaces, these dielectric properties can be readily tailored. Therefore, multilayer films are promising to be used as next-generation dielectrics for future polymer film capacitors.
