Polymers are widely used in the oil and gas industry as friction reducers, viscosifiers, and diverter, etc. in hydraulic fracturing, drilling, and enhanced oil recovery. The applications of polymers are typically few kilometers underground in porous formations filled with fluids of oil and water at high temperature and high pressure. This harsh environment, though posts challenges to efficient transport and maintain long term stability of polymers downhole, also provides opportunities for some innovative applications of the polymers. Here we will give an overview of some novel applications of polymers in the industry. We will show the examples of polymers with transient stability in downhole as cost-effective diverters, polymeric nanoparticles as mud logging tags for accurate cutting depth correlation, polymeric coatings for stabilizing and efficient transporting nanoparticles in high salinity fluids, and chemical modification of zwitterionic polymers that dramatically changes the polymer retention in porous formation rocks.
