Abstract

The prevention of drug use continues to be a subject that is discussed little in the social context of adolescents in either the family or school setting, as it is considered taboo. Thus, addressing drug use as a public health problem and multifactor phenomenon is necessary so that adolescents recognize problems that can arise from the consumption of these substances. As the school is a place of intellectual and social development for adolescents, it is an appropriate setting for prevention activities. Objective: Evaluate drug prevention activities from the perspective of adolescents. Methods: A study was conducted with a sample of students who participated in an open interview addressing four workshops on drug use prevention conducted with students at the school (n = 445) divided into 16 groups, totaling 16 meetings. At the end of the workshops, the adolescents were asked about their impressions. The discourses were recorded, transcribed and submitted to content analysis using the IRAMUTEQ program. Results: Paulo Freire's problematizing method was cited as more favorable in the opinion of the students and was considered a facilitating tool for the learning process, contributing to autonomy building by providing moments of reflection and the exchange of knowledge between the facilitator of the workshops and the adolescents. Conclusions: The workshops favored self-knowledge and self-reflection and enabled the creation of a space free of judgment for the discussion, learning and demystification of drug use, which is normality rarely or never discussed at schools. This was achieved through dynamics other than those traditionally proposed and instituted in the teaching system.
