Abstract

Background: More than 50% of the people with depression do not seek help from a specialist. Stigma towards people with depression decrease help-seeking and compliance with treatment. Research regarding stigma towards people with depression is scarce, especially in developing countries Objective: To study social characteristics of stigma towards people with depression To make comparison between urban and rural localities Methods: In total 612 students from Moldova filled the questionnaire which, beyond stigma towards people with depression, evaluated individual and family characteristics of the participants. Stigma was evaluated using The Depression Stigma Scale (DSS), developed by K. Griffiths. DSS measures personal and perceived stigma based on a vignette about a person with depression. After checking the data distribution, data were summarized using means and standard deviations (sd), and comparison were performed using Student t-test and ANOVA. Results and conclusions: Level of stigma mean (SD), measured by DSS presented higher values in students from rural localities, both for personal stigma [19.73 (4.88) vs. 14.09 (4.88) p<0.001] and for perceived stigma [27.43 (3.30) vs. 21.62 (4.15) p<0.001]. There is no significant difference between stigma levels when comparing students that have someone in their class with depression. There is no difference in the level of stigma regarding the presence of a person with depression in the family. Previous studies show that contact with people that have depression decrease level of stigmatization, however there is no effect on the level of stigma in our study. More research is needed in developing countries in order to understand characteristics of stigma towards depression.
