Abstract

Introduction: Choking is defined as a manifestation of the organism to expel the food or object that takes a wrong path. The occurrence of foreign body aspiration at school is common and may result in major complications and even death in children. Thus, the following research question was formulated: How important is the training performed by nurses for prevention and care of the choking child in the day care center? Aims: To train teachers about choking; To identify the teachers' perception of the training performed by nurses in the nursery. Method: Research of the research-action type carried out in a municipal nursery located in the eastern zone of São Paulo during curricular internship activities of nursing undergraduates from Paulista University - UNIP. The sample was composed by 8 teachers and the research was carried out in 3 phases: planning, training and evaluation of the training after approval of the Ethics and Research Committee. Results: All teachers who participated in the training (n = 8), reported having acquired more knowledge about choking, considered the topic relevant to the child's health promotion, referred more safety to attending a choked child during activities at school, identified ways to prevent choking after training, and considered it important that the nurse participate in the school environment for training. Conclusion: It was possible to identify the need for training for attention to children in a situation of choking in the day care center, to plan the training, to train the teachers and to carry out the subsequent evaluation. Final considerations: The nurse plays an important role according to nursery teachers, and can contribute with punctual training, in a practical way, leaving the teachers safer. We suggest that new researches have to be done in the school context to ensure safety of children in nursery.
