Hundreds of triosmium carbonyl complexes containing bidentate phosphine ligands have been reported, but very few have involved more than one type of diphosphine ligand. Using microwave heating, we have investigated the reactivity of Os3(CO)12 with the two diphosphines bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe). Four new osmium carbonyl complexes have been isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis: Os3(CO)8(µ-dppe)(κ2-dppe) (1), Os3(CO)8(µ-dppe)(κ2-dppm) (2), [Os3(CO)9(µ-dppm)]2(µ-dppe) (3), and [Os3(CO)9(µ-dppe)]2(µ-dppe) (4). Complexes 1 and 2 are the first known examples of triosmium clusters containing diphosphine ligands that exhibit both bridging and chelating bonding modes in the same molecule. Complexes 2 and 3 are the first examples of triosmium clusters containing both dppm and dppe ligands in the same molecule. In complexes 3 and 4, two triangular Os3 units containing a diphosphine ligand are held together by a third bridging diphosphine ligand. We will present details of the syntheses of these new compounds and compare their structural features.
