Presently, oral implantology controls the fixture-host tissue interaction by surface topography. The prevalence of peri implantitis on the long term suggests that implant surfaces should not just promote osteointegration, but also moderate peri-implant inflammatory response. A possible approach involves enabling implant surfaces to guide peri implant tissue healing through biological molecules linked to the surface. This communication presents in vitro, animal and clinical results on titanium implants bearing surface-linked nanolayers of hyaluronan, a major player in inflammation control and tissue repair.
