Objective:
The purpose of this study was to determine the rise in 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in adults (18 years above) in response to either Intra muscular Cholecalciferol 300,000 IU or Oral Ergocalciferol 50,000 weekly and assess if presence of diabetes influences response to vitamin D treatment.

Methods 

A clinical audit of patients’ medical records from Al Ain hospital in Al Ain- UAE for the period 01.01.2014 to 31–12.2016 was conducted retrospectively. We studied a cohort of 120 patients, 29 of them had type 2 diabetes mellitus. We collected the data for serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D before and after the patient were treated with either Intra muscular Cholecalciferol 300,000 IU or Oral Ergocalciferol 50,000 weekly.
The peak rise in the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D was calculated and Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to analyze the results statistically as data was not normally distributed (unpaired t-test was used to analyze the results statistically).


Results 
The administration of IM Cholecalciferol group induced more increase of vitamin D level compared to Oral ergocalciferol. Cholecalciferol was associated with a mean increase of 36.37 nmol/l (95% CI, 31.26-41.47) compared to Oral ergocalciferol group which was associated with a mean increase of 28.5 nmol/l (95% CI, 22.88-34.16). 
The presence of diabetes did not influence the response to IM Cholecalciferol with the people with type 2 diabetes (n=13) who received Oral ergocalciferol showing mean a mean increase vitamin D level of 37.9 nmol/l (95% CI, 29.62-46.24) compared to ergocalciferol group (n=16) which was associated with a mean increase of 36.9 nmol/l (95% CI, 20.13-53.73); p=0.2825


Conclusion 
The administration of IM Cholecalciferol was more effective in increasing serum Vitamin D level compared to Oral ergocalciferol. This effect is not influenced by presence of diabetes.
