Abstract
Introduction Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) accounts for the majority of cases of diabetes Mellitus (DM) in children including Africa. Analysis from a large multicenter observational study found that knowledge of glycemic targets by patients and parents, and consistent target setting by the diabetes team was associated with improved metabolic control. So the aim of this study is to see the prevalence of glycemic control in general and to see that effect of caretaker’s diabetic knowledge on glycemic control.
Objective: To determine the effect caretakers diabetic knowledge on glycemic control among children with T1DMT who were followed up at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital and Yekatit 12 hospital.
Method: Prospective cross sectional study of 202 children on follow up from August 24-october 15, 2016. Diabetic Knowledge of the  caretaker was determined using a structured questioner with Amharic interpretation of the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center’s Revised Diabetes Knowledge Test. HgA1c level and Average Fasting blood sugar level of the previous one month was used to assess the glycemic control.
Analysis:  descriptive and analytic statistics as applicable. Statistically significant association  was  at  P-value  of  <0.05. 
Result:  A total of 202 participants (104 female and 98 male, with age range of 1-18 year) were studied. The mean (+SD) DKT score of the caretakers, was 52.5% (±16.5). Most of the caretakers had average scores between 40% and 60%. Some 89% of the children came with their parents as their primary care takers and the rest came with non-relatives as their care takers. There was no significant association between primary care takers DKT result and the glycemic control (p= 0.9) and person’s correlation coefficient of 0.009. Only 65 (32.2%) of children in our study had good glycemic control based on the average FBS of the previous one month.
Conclusion and recommendation: Our study showed no significant asociation between  DKT score and glycemic control. But it  was also shown that the DKT score our participant care takers was lower than the studies that showed significant association with glycemic control. So we primarily need to improve the knowledge of the caretakers who are under our follow up through further educational  assessments  and  supplemental  diabetes  education.   Therefore, it is strongly suggested that, members of  health care  services assess, correct, and  /or expand  the caretakers  knowledge  of  diabetes to facilitate the  prevention  of  long  term biomedical consequences.
