Introduction: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is more prevalent and has a higher incidence in males. So, few specific studies about SCI in women are available, specially if functional results are considered. 
Purpose: To know functional and epidemiologic characteristics of women that have undergone treatment program with Lokomat System (LS) and to determinate the best moment for this therapy.
Method: A prospective study on consecutive women admitted in authors´ institution diagnosed of incomplete spinal cord injury (ISCI) from C1 to T12 and less than 6 months of evolution. Performed treatment consisted on 40 30-minute sessions, five days per week for 2 months. Evaluated data before and after treatment were: Epidemiological SCI variables, muscle strength (LEMS), Functional Independence Measures (FIM-L, SCIM III), gait ability (WISCI II), and 10m and 6-minute tests. Life quality was assesed with Euroqol5D scale. 
Results: 64 patients completed the study. Mean age was 44 with no differences between ISCI level and ASIA. After treatment every studied variable improved significatively. When correction considering gaining after treatment was performed, patients treated before 3 months statistically improved in LEMS, WISCI II, 6-minute test, FIM, FIML, SCIM and Euroqol5D when compared with those included later. 
Conclusions: Better functional results can be achieved with earlier treatment with LS, during the first three months after ISCI.
