Objective
The purpose of this study was to describe the therapeutic aspects of the largest series to date of canine sporotrichosis, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Methods
The study included dogs with isolation of Sporothrix spp. in fungal culture and followed up at the Laboratory of Clinical Research on Dermatozoonosis in Domestic Animals (Lapclin-Dermzoo)/Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2004-2014). The therapeutic regimens and outcomes were collected from the medical records of the animals. 
Results
182 dogs with sporotrichosis were treated in the period of the study. 
Ketoconazole (KTZ) monotherapy (3.9-41.7 mg/kg/once daily) was administered to 91 dogs (N = 182; 50%). Regarding the outcome, clinical cure was obtained in 39 dogs (N = 91; 42.8%). Sixteen had clinical adverse reactions at some time of the treatment (N = 91; 17.6%). In 47 cases there were lost during follow-up (N = 91, 51.6%). Five dogs died from causes not related to sporotrichosis (N = 91, 5.5%).
Itraconazole (ITZ) monotherapy (6.3-21.3 mg/kg/once daily) was administered to 59 dogs (N = 182; 32.4%). Regarding the outcome, 32 were cured (N = 59; 54.2%). Thirteen had clinical adverse reactions at some time of the treatment (N = 59; 22.0%). Twenty-three dogs were lost during follow-up (N = 58, 39.6%) and three were still under treatment when the database closed (N = 59, 5.1%). One animal had no outcome because of lack of information in the medical record.
Thirty-two animals (N = 182; 17.6%) were treated with more than one therapeutic regimen at different times. The initial treatment was ITZ or KTZ at the discretion of the veterinarian: in cases non-responsive to KTZ, this drug was replaced by ITZ; in cases non-responsive to ITZ, a regimen of KI capsule (formulated drug) associated to ITZ was initiated. Regarding the outcome, 18 were cured (N = 32; 56.2%). Seven had clinical adverse reactions at some time of the treatment (N = 32; 21.9%). Eight dogs were lost during follow-up (N = 31, 25.8%) and two were 
under treatment until the database closed (N = 32, 6.2%). Two animals died (N = 32, 6.25%) and one was euthanized (N = 32; 3.1%), all of them due to causes not related to sporotrichosis. One animal had no outcome information.
Conclusions 
Different from what occurs in feline and human sporotrichosis, therapeutic studies about canine sporotrichosis are scarce, just case reports or cases series that included a few cases. Itraconazole remains the drug of choice in dogs with sporotrichosis, as well as, KTZ and KI+ITZ are commonly used options.
