Background: To date, there is no consensus or guidelines for the surgical management of parathyroid disorders. 
 
Objectives: To assess current practice amongst surgeons undertaking parathyroid surgery in the United Kingdom.
 
Methods: An online survey was disseminated to 142 parathyroid surgeons in the UK, identified from BAETS(British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons)membership. The survey evaluated key areas of peri-operative management.
 
Results: Key areas of practice included the following; (% of surgeons): day case surgery (19%) vs. inpatient (47%), use of preoperative nasoendoscopy for laryngeal examination (75%), intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring (50%) and regular use of wound drains (8%) vs. never using drains (67%). 
 
Conclusions: This national survey evaluating parathyroid surgical practice demonstrates discrepancies in a number of key areas. Currently, there is some guidance from BAETS for thyroid surgery.  This study highlights the need for similar national guidelines to be set around parathyroid surgery.
