Background : 
Metabolic syndrome has been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by inciting inflammatory reaction and endothelial dysfunction underlying the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease. 

Aims: To determine whether the high uric acid serum level is a risk factor for acute ischemic stroke patients.

Methods: A case control study was conducted in Neurology clinic at Sanglah General Hospital Denpasar Bali. since December 1st, 2010 to March 31st, Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients defined as cases and patients without AIS as controls.


Results: A total number of 138 eligible subjects were divided into case and control groups, with each group consisted of 69 patients. There were 52 (75.4%) patients in case group with high serum UA level compare to 17 (24.6 %) in control group.

In bivariate analyses, there was significant relationship between high serum UA of more than 5.5 mg% and incidence of AIS with OR 9.36 (CI 95%: 4.31-20.30; p<0.001).

Subsequent multivariate analysis was conducted for several independent risk factors related to the occurrence of AIS and found that type 2 diabetes mellitus (OR 35.65; 95% CI 3.92-324.58; p = 0.002); hypertension (OR= 30.61; 95%CI 7.6-123.47; p = 0.001); UA (OR = 30.46; 95% CI: 6.60-140.62; p<0.001); low level of education (OR= 11.35, 95% CI 2.42-53.32; p = 0.002), and abnormal level of HDL (OR 3.58; 95% CI: 1.04-12.33; p = 0.043) increased the risk of AIS. 

Conclusions: high serum UA (> 5,5 mg%) was found to be an independent risk factor for AIS.
