Background: Data suggest that post-stroke function and mortality are worse in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). However, the data are limited, and often incomplete. This is problematic for stroke studies conducted in LMIC.
Relevance: Study validity depends on completeness of data. Recognizing the issue, we have implemented a variety of strategies to mitigate missing data in the Organized Stroke Care Across Income-Levels (OSCAIL) study.
Methods: The OSCAIL study is an observational pilot study investigating the feasibility and effect of implementing elements of organized in-patient stroke care in LMIC hospitals (Rwanda, South Africa, India and Uganda). A key study element is the 3-month follow-up (from time of stroke onset). Strategies to find lost participants require an understanding of the local hospital system and have been developed with input from the local country champions, sites and study team.
Results: Initial experience with Rwandan and South African sites (3 sites, 201 participants) highlight the challenges. Of the 106 expected 3-month visits, 84% (n=89) have been received. The most common reason for lack of contact is incorrect phone number. Recruitment continues, and data will be presented on 3-month stroke outcomes, the numerous strategies in place to mitigate loss and the effectiveness of the strategies
Conclusions: Our international multidisciplinary team has a unique understanding of
both study specific and local issues that affect completeness of follow-up, enabling us
to identify, implement and evaluate novel strategies to ensure complete follow-up.
