The novel clinical construct of Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source (ESUS) describes cryptogenic strokes of suspected thromboembolic etiology. ESUS was the basis for two large RCTs (NAVIGATE ESUS, RE-SPECT ESUS). While these trials will likely provide us with valuable information on older ESUS patients, there will still be a gap in the knowledge of younger (<50years) ESUS patients due to the respective trial designs. By current estimates, 15-20% ESUS patients will be <50years of age.
We seek to determine clinical characteristics of Young-ESUS (21>age<50years) patients using ESUS international working group diagnostic criteria (Figure 1), and to determine the rates of stroke recurrence, death and hospitalization in this population.
