Purpose: Bathrooms become a challenging and potentially unsafe experience for stroke survivors due to the many barriers that inhibit proper access and use of bathrooms. Yet, bathroom usage is an integral component to maintaining an individual’s quality of life by performing activities of daily living, such as toileting and bathing with independence. The purpose of this study was to determine (1) What are the optimal bathroom configurations to promote bathroom accessibility for stroke survivors? and (2) What knowledge can be obtained on bathroom accessibility from geriatric and disabled population research? 
Methods: A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the optimal bathroom environment for stroke survivors. The following databases were searched: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, & EMBASE. The search included articles published between 1988 to 2018. Articles were included if they reported on assistive devices and/or bathrooms configuration (e.g. grab bars) in adult stroke survivors, geriatric or disabled populations. 
Results: A total of 14 articles met inclusion criteria. Articles varied widely in research design and were predominately published in the United States. From the synthesized data, recommendations are provided for optimal bathroom spacing, flooring, switches/controls, vanities/drawers/storage, grab bars, toilets, and showers.
Conclusion: Recommendations will assist health care professionals to advocate for optimal bathroom designs and accessibility devices for stroke survivors, in both their homes and healthcare facilities. Toileting and other bathroom activities continue to be a neglected area of research despite having significant implications on quality of life and autonomy for individuals experiencing functional deficits post-stroke.

BATHROOM ACCESSIBILITY FOR STROKE SURVIVORS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS AND THEIR CLIENTS/PATIENTS
