Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a progressive condition associated with changes in behavior, loss of higher social skills and emotional perception. It has been shown that FTD may be more common in men. However, there are no studies comparing manifestation of behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) between men and women among these patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare BPSD between men and women with FTD measured by Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI). This was a registry-based cohort study. We studied patients diagnosed with FTD and registered both in the Swedish Dementia Registry and the Swedish BPSD registry (n=237). We used the 12 item version of NPI assessing following symptoms: Hallucinations, Delusions, Agitation/aggression, Dysphoria/depression, Anxiety, Irritability, Disinhibition, Euphoria, Apathy, Aberrant motor behavior, Sleep and night-time behavior change, Appetite and eating change. Separate logistic regression models for each symptom were built to estimate odds ratio (OR) of having symptoms amongst males and females. 55% of the study sample were women and 45% were men. The mean (SD) age was 71.9 (9,1) years, mean (SD) Mini–Mental State Examination (MMSE) score was 22.2 (5.8) points and the mean (SD) number of drugs was 3.2 (2.7). There were no significant differences in clinical characteristics between the sexes. Compared to females, males had a lower risk of anxiety (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.30-0.90). There were no other differences between women and men regarding any of the other symptoms. A higher risk of anxiety, but not of other BPSD in women patients requires further studies.
