The repeated application of short-term dietary assessment instruments has been recommended to accurately estimate usual dietary intake but is limited by the associated costs. Web-based, self-administered 24-h dietary recalls (24HDRs) such as the UK myfood24 are promising to facilitate multiple short-term assessments in large-scale studies. So far, there is no such 24HDR available for use in the German population. Our aim was to develop and evaluate a German adaptation of myfood24. The adaptation process included the development of an appropriate food database and the translation of the online user interface to German language as well as feasibility testing of the final version. From the German Food Code and Nutrient Data Base and our in-house database LEBTAB, generic and a large number of branded food items were included in the underlying database. myfood24-Germany was evaluated in a convenience sample of 92 adults (84% female) aged 17-78 years. Participants conducted four non-consecutive 24HDRs with myfood24-Germany and answered an evaluation questionnaire after the final recall. The questionnaire was administered to collect data on usability (using the System Usability Scale (SUS) of 0-100) and acceptability of the tool. The final database included 11,501 generic and branded food items with up to 131 nutrients. The median SUS score was “good” (SUS=78, IQR= 18) and 67% of the participants rated the user-friendliness of the tool as very good or good. The self reported median completion time was 15.0 ±10.0 minutes. About 95% of participants reported that they had no technical problems or difficulties in using myfood24-Germany. The search function was rated to be easy to use by 79% of the participants. However, half of the participants reported having problems with finding the correct food item in the database. A German version of myfood24 was successfully developed. The adaptation to country-specific needs was possible with reasonable efforts. Main task within the adaption process was the development of an appropriate food and nutrient database. The overall good evaluation after a four time usage suggests that multiple 24HDRs with myfood24-Germany are feasible and an acceptable burden to participants.
