MXenes are a new class of 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitridesthat exhibit excellent metallic properties. A composite material, fabricated using a 2D-MXene and semiconductor is presented. This composite has demonstrated excellent potential as a candidate for plasmonic applications in photocatalysis. In photocatalysis, a metal-semiconductor interface can influence hot-electron injection efficiency and thus influence the performance of photocatalysis. Therefore, it is critical to understand the interfacial electron dynamics that may help establish a reasonable design for the underlying heterostructures. In this work, we explored the interfacial charge injection of Ti3C2MXene-TiO2composites in which MXene was embedded in to a TiO2nanofiber substrate. We explored charge flow in these MXene-TiO2composites through a visible pump-transient IR absorption experiment. We observed plasmonic carrier injection from the photoexcited MXene into the semiconductor substrate, and back electron transfer from TiO2to MXene. The plasmon of the MXene is injected into the conduction band of TiO2at a fast time constant of ca. 200 fs, while the back electron transfer from the TiO2to the MXene occurs at a slow time constant of ca. 20 ps. Our results provide alternative applications of 2D MXene materials for plasmonics.
