Shift current is usally considered as a bulk photovoltaic effect induced by linearly polarized (LP) light. Using time-dependent perturbation theory, we invesitagte the theory of shift current induced by circularly polarized (CP) light, and a general formula is derived. By using a two-band model widely applied in 2D materials, we calculate the CP shift current quantitatively, and discover its magnitude at the same order as that of an LP shift current. The study reveals CP shift current constitutes an important part of DC photocurrent response, and the mechanism is important for future photovoltaic materials design.
