It has early been recognized that the local character of NMR spectroscopy enables the observation of nuclei of interest in compounds not showing crystalline periodicity. This has triggered numerous studies in the field of glass science where a continuous range of compositions can be obtained, making it possible to tune macroscopic properties almost at will. Disorder can also be at the core of targeted properties in material science. Whether speaking of heterogeneous catalysts or phosphors, their active properties rely on the addition of very small amounts of a “foreign” component which locally disrupt their structural organization. Characterization, and possibly quantification, of the disorder present in materials appears hence to be key to understand the structure/property relationships required for material-by-design strategies.<br/>We will outline the specific features of solid-state NMR applied to disordered materials. Line shape analysis for spin 1/2 as well as quadrupolar nuclei will be covered. Specific acquisition strategies will be explained with their application to one- and two-dimensional experiments. Examples will be given to illustrate the type of information one can extract from homo- or hetero-nuclear correlations based whether on indirect J-couplings or direct dipolar interactions. Finally, some of the possible ways to relate NMR parameters to structural features and quantify disorder will be presented.
