While the perovskite crystal structure has been known for decades, the recent proliferation of studies into the unique nature of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) has been driven by the potential to significantly improve solar cell device efficiency. The archetypal HOIP, MAPbl3, features a three-dimensional crystalline structure comprising corner-sharing metal halide octahedra with a small organic molecule occupying the space created by these octahedra. Importantly, changing the dimensionality of the inorganic framework provides an opportunity to introduce complex, functional organic molecules that do more than provide structure. In 1999, David Mitzi’s group reported the first indications that such complex organic molecules could tune the energy band alignment of these self-assembled quantum wells. As a result of this seminal work, these two-dimensional hybrid structures are now explored to create unique optical, electrical, and/or spin properties that could become the foundation of a new semiconductor technology. A fundamental challenge that must be overcome to realize this vision is the synthesis of HOIP thin films comprising large, complex organic molecules that often have incompatible solubility with metal halides in solution-based deposition. Alternatively, vapor-phase deposition of organic precursors can introduce degradation and make stoichiometric deposition with inorganic precursors more difficult. In contrast, resonant infrared, matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (RIR-MAPLE), is a versatile thin-film deposition technique that features aspects of both solution-based and vapor-phase deposition, and it can enable a wide variety of HOIP thin films that can be difficult to achieve otherwise. This talk will review the development of RIR-MAPLE growth of hybrid perovskite thin films, demonstrating application to the conventional MAPbI3, as well as two-dimensional HOIPs with increasing complexity of the organic molecule (e.g., phenethylammonium- and oligothiophene-based metal halide perovskites).
