External representations play a significant role in chemistry and have been the subject of considerable study regarding students' learning.  An examination of students' perceptions of chemical representations indicates a lack of mastery that can draw inappropriate inferences, leading to the generation of robust misconceptions.  Cognitive psychology offers theoretical frameworks, such as heuristics and perception learning, with the potential to unpack the manner in which students misappropriate resources to make sense of such representations.  Data related to student perceptions of canonical chemical representations will be presented to shed light on how students might be better prepared to use representations and their affordances in pursuit of learning.
