Among the seminal contributions of Prof. Lowery Bretz to the advancement of chemistry education and chemistry education research, her efforts to develop valid and reliable ways to measure student conceptual knowledge stand out. Her research provides not only the template for how to create high quality measures of student conceptual understanding, but the instruments themselves provide insight into how teaching ideas can evolve and improve student learning outcomes. Taking inspiration from this perspective for many years, this talk will emphasize how formative measures can be used to inform teaching decisions. While such formative assessment seldom, if ever, provides proof of the correct way to teach, it represents the foundation for taking wise actions in the classroom. Examples will be drawn from recent efforts to incorporate better assessment in the teaching of general chemistry and quantum chemistry.
