Dirhodium(II,II) complexes have been recently discovered to possess excited states that can be useful in a number of areas.  The modification of the coordination sphere can be used to tune the type, lifetime, and reactivity of excited states in these complexes, such that in some cases they produce singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species that is useful in photodynamic therapy. In contrast, the presence of low-lying metal/ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excited states gives rise to redox activity that has been found to be useful in photocatalysis to generate clean fuels.
