A variety of late transition metal complexes are known to undergo alkane C-H bond activation to form metal-alkyl (M-R) species. The reaction of such M-R products with molecular oxygen to generate M-OOR compounds represents a potential functionalization step in a selective aerobic alkane oxidation process. The results of our studies of the mechanisms of these oxygen insertion reactions at d<sup>8 </sup>square planar metal complexes will be presented.
