What did we teach? And what did we learn? And how did Larry Duffy inspire and make possible our work? This presentation tells the stories that answer these questions. In the process, we will introduce you to our students, our curriculum, our excursions out into the tundra, along the shoreline, and around town to explore the frontlines of climate change with those who are living and studying it firsthand. For three summers, the presenters have been instructors at Ilisagvik College, the only tribal college in Alaska. The college is located in Utqiagvik (Barrow) and lies only a few hundred feet from the Chukchi Sea which is part of the Arctic Ocean. Our students are Alaskan Native whose ancestors have called this place home for generations. In the Iñupiaq language, “vik” means place. llisagvik means “A place to learn” and Utqiagvik means “a place for gathering wild roots.” Our curriculum takes the concept of place to heart as together with our students, we integrate the knowledge of local scientists and cultural Elders to better understand the effects of climate change on Alaska’s North Slope, the implications for indigenous communities, and how to respond.
