Humans are social animals that form family groups and live in communities.  Communities settle on land that provides vital resources such as access to food and water and, importantly creates a sense of place, the familiar.  As communities survive and grow, this association with the land and the environment becomes a culture with values.  Knowledge is passed on from generation to generation as both the land and community change.  This Local knowledge is important, however as science and technology have grown over the last century, the Local" has been de-emphasized in beginning science education.  This shift in early science education can discriminate in the opportunities for certain groups to engage and succeed in the chemical and environmental sciences.  In the subarctic, we have followed the lead of the SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) movement to approach student engagement by bringing in more holistic concepts like sustainability, resilience and cultural issues into general chemistry and some special topic courses.  The inclusion of local examples and adaptations moves students to participate in discussions related to their local community's health and environmental issues. These in class discussions and conversations start the process of the individual student thinking about potential opportunities for a career, that is both rewarding and, at the same time, serves and gives back to their family and community.
