Bimetallic ruthenium complexes are an attractive group of compounds for carrying out multi-electron catalysis.  The ability to spread sequential oxidations over multiple metal centers will lower the energy required to oxidize the complex multiple times.  In addition, ligand design can have a significant impact on the electronic properties of these complexes.  Our laboratory is interested in a class of ligands that contain hydroxyl-substituted polypyridyl ligands, where deprotonation impacts these electronic properties.  Coupling these acid/base sensitive ligands with multiple metals provides the potential to significantly lower the energy of multiple oxidations.  However, a significant challenge exists due to the fact that increasing the number of hydroxyl groups in a complex leads to lower solubilities and difficulties in synthesis.  In this work, we will report efforts towards the synthesis of bimetallic complexes that contain these hydroxy-substituted polypyridyl ligands.  The fragments necessary for making these types of complexes will be reported and compared for their effectiveness in synthesizing these species.
