Polymer innovations have been eagerly accepted by society in the past half century. Currently, however, plastics are under pressure because of a waste challenge. One way to address this is to use recycling to provide value to the macromolecular chains that are abundantly present in plastic waste. The technology of polymer recycling will benefit from classical polymer science, as it deals with the relation between molecular structure, rheology, processing, and properties. On top of this, specific scientific challenges emerge from the recycling infrastructure. In this contribution we will illustrate this with some recent examples focusing on polymer ensemble characterization, blend rheology, and predictive capability development.
