Most current commercial chromatographic instrumentation has been designed for stationary use on a laboratory bench in a controlled environment. The desire for reduced laboratory bench footprint and increased instrument portability, spanning from mobility within the laboratory for coupling with other hyphenated techniques such as mass spectrometry, to movement between laboratories and to remote locations with limited available resources, have stimulated efforts to reduce the size and power requirements of chromatographic instruments, and rethink methods for deployment, such as sample preparation and solvent usage that are both practical and “green.” With respect to both gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC), simple interfacing of the separation column to both injector and detector without degrading chromatographic performance has always been the most difficult challenge. With regard to compact GC, resistive heating technologies and planar (e.g., microchip) column formats have been advanced to address portability requirements; however, robustness of the column interfaces when subjected to high temperatures during temperature programming, and uniformity of the temperature throughout the column length can be challenging. For LC, small-diameter nanoflow capillary columns have been available for some time; however, minimizing detrimental extra-column volumes in connections and injecting small sample volumes reproducibly still remain difficult. Advancements in both portable GC and LC, with particular emphasis on column formats and corresponding technologies for their preparation, will be described. Novel capillary column forms for compact thermal gradient GC and “plug-and-play” LC are included.
