3M has developed a family of polysiloxane segmented copolymers which are of interest for a variety of applications.  These materials retain many of the desirable properties of traditional silicone elastomers, but due to phase separation of short, hydrogen-bonded organic segments, they behave as thermoplastics and can thus be processed by conventional extrusion, injection molding, or solution techniques.  One member of this family, the silicone poly(oxamides), was first reported by 3M and is especially interesting as a new class of polymers.  Careful control of structural features, including polymer microstructure, enables tunability of physical properties for applications including optical films and pressure sensitive adhesives.
