The pioneering synthesis of gold nanorods has propelled a number of fields forward, including the study of plasmonic colloids, the application of nanomaterials in medicine, and more. This presentation will outline how the seeded synthesis of gold nanorods inspired development of seed-mediated co-reduction as a route to multimetallic nanocrystals with defined shapes. With seed-mediated co-reduction, multiple metal precursors are reduced to deposit metal preferentially on seeds. Interestingly, a hallmark feature of seed-mediated co-reduction has been transfer of seed symmetry to the final multimetallic nanocrystals, which is in contrast to the synthesis of gold nanorods where a reduction in symmetry occurs during nanocrystal growth. These two outcomes will be contrasted, and a third mechanism that accounts for controlled symmetry reduction in metal nanocrystal growth will be presented.<br/>
