One of the most convenient methods to modify the surface chemistry of gold nanorods is to utilize electrostatic interactions. From immobilizing proteins and other biomolecules to fabricating multilayer structures, harnessing electrostatics can be a powerful tool for surface modifications. The Layer-by-Layer method to modify the surface chemistry of charged nanoparticles is a facile approach that is widely used yet there are still unexplored aspects of this methodology. Electrostatic, chemical, and geometric effects play a large part in the composition, stability, and interactions of polyelectrolyte-coated gold nanoparticles. This presentation will highlight some of our work to quantify the amount of adsorbed polyelectrolyte as a route to illuminate how individual particles interact with one another. Additionally, chemical and physical control over the charge state and secondary structure of an adsorbed polyelectrolyte can modulate these interparticle interactions as a method towards controlled assembly of nanoscale materials.<br/>
