A selective and sensitive sulfur-containing colorimetric chemosensor APTS ((E)-2-(tert-butyl)-6-(((2-(phenylthio)phenyl)imino)methyl)phenol) was prepared to detect copper. APTS showed a distinct color change from colorless to yellow when detecting copper. The detection limit of APTS for copper was 0.52 μM. APTS has also been successfully applied to paper-strip to detect copper for the first time among sulfur-containing colorimetric chemosensors. To find the binding mode between APTS and copper, UV-vis spectroscopy and ESI-MS analyses were carried out. Sensing mechanism of APTS toward copper was suggested to be the combination of ICT and LMCT through theoretical calculations.
