Bimetallic and trimetallic nanoparticles are of interest due to their potential optical, biomedical, and catalytic applications. Plasmonic AuCu nanoparticles are of interest especially in CO<sub>2</sub> reduction, CO oxidation, and photocatalysis. Herein we report two synthetic procedures and thorough characterization for isotropic and anisotropic nanoparticles that contain Au, Ag, and Cu in varying compositions. Size and shape dispersity have been analyzed by complementary techniques, including scanning transmission electron microscopy with a high-angle annular dark field detector and diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The synthetic methods have achieved monodisperse, ultrasmall (2 nm) bimetallic spherical particles and trimetallic nanorods with widths of 8-10 nm and aspect ratios of 2-3. The particles have tunable compositions that have been analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The spherical particles have compositions comparable to that of their nominal values and the nanorods have atomic percentages of Cu ranging from 10-25%. The oxidation and dissolution of particles have been analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to assess the effect that bimetallic and trimetallic compositions have compared to that of their monometallic counterparts.
