Gold nanoparticles are known to support localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which lays the foundation for many applications such as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and photothermal therapy. Due to their anisotropic shape, gold nanorods (AuNRs) exhibit two LSPRs: a transverse LSPR located at about 520 nm, and a longitudinal LSPR which can be tuned from about 600 nm to ~1200 nm by varying the nanorod aspect ratio. Thermal treatment is known to alter the shape of gold nanorods, and consequently, affect their physical and chemical properties. The bulk melting point of gold is 1064 degrees Celcius. Gold nanorods are transformed to spheres within an hour at 250 °C, but the thermal stability of gold nanorods can be enhanced by silica coating. In this work, the morphology and the crystalline form of gold nanorods coating with either mesoporous silica and dense silica are investigated from 300 degrees Celcius to 900 degrees Celcius under air or argon flow. Depending on conditions, nanorods can remain rod-shaped but with reduced aspect ratio, or round down to spheres.
