This talk will present a retrospective on the field of quantum inorganic chemistry over the last 50 years. The author will discuss his entry into this field and the opportunities and challenges that the field has presented and will present going forward. Special emphasis will be given to the development of new advances in quantum chemistry that have led to new ways of thinking about structure, bonding, and reactivity in transition metal and f-element chemistry. The talk will also discuss the synergy between theory and experiment in inorganic chemistry, and the extraordinary community that comprises inorganic chemistry.
