Given the great economic importance of silicon-based materials, coupling agents, and chemical reagents, it is of interest to develop new and more efficient transformations involving silicon-element bonds. In this respect, transition metals have played a central role in the inception and growth of the organosilicon industry. For example, the Direct Process involves copper catalysis and is practiced on a massive scale to convert elemental silicon to dimethyldichlorosilane. Also, olefin hydrosilylations provide silicon-carbon bonds in specialty monomers and in cross-linked silicone polymers and are mainly catalyzed by platinum. Thus, there has been long-standing interest in transition-metal silicon chemistry and the unusual structures that may serve as intermediates in new or more efficient transformations. Among these are metal complexes that contain sigma complexes, complexes with multiple bonds between a metal and silicon, and complexes with only metal-silicon bonds (silicides). This presentation will focus on the synthesis of such compounds and new catalytic pathways that take advantage of these structures.<br/>
