Nickel catalyzed photo- and electroredox cycles have emerged as a prominent methodology. Transient laser mechanistic studies, however, reveal that many pf these cycles are indeed not authentic photo- or electro- catalyzed the catalysis is actually derived from a self-sustained Ni(I/III) cycle. The photoredox and electrochemical redox steps are needed only to rejuvenate the cycle when off-pathway reactions deplete the competent N(I/III) species that support the catalysis. The formation of off-cycle mono- and bi- metallic Ni intermediates under equilibrium with on-pathway catalysts has been identified. With this mechanistic underpinning, we have optimized conditions for achieving self-sustained catalysis at high efficiencies. Moreover, with mechanistic knowledge in hand, more streamlined and effective methodologies may be designed without the need for a light source or electrode.<br/>
