The ability for first row transition metlas to engage in multiple bonding will be exmained through a series of molecules. A discussion of bonding formalisms will be discussed to discern whether metal-ligand mulitple bonds form, even when they are feasible, as opposed to sbailization of ligand-based radicals. The periodic trends of metal-ligand multiple bond formation will be examined traversing from iron to copper, exmaining the electronic structures of putative metal-N multiple bonds. The work will be discussed in terms of the reactivity trends observed for these species to undergo functional group transfer chemistry.
