Tris[(1-isopropylbenzimidazol-2-yl)dimethylsilyl]methane, [Tismi-PrBenz]H, and other tripodal compounds that are capable of providing a [CN3] donor array, have been employed to form metallacarbatrane and related compounds of the main group and transition metals, such as magnesium, zinc, cadmium and copper. The transannular M–C bond lengths in the atrane compounds are longer than the sum of the respective covalent radii, which is consistent with a bonding description that features a formally zwitterionic component. In addition, the copper derivative, [Tismi-PrBenz]Cu is characterized by an “inverted ligand field”, in which the occupied antibonding orbitals are localized more on carbon than on copper.
