C-H activation by Ir(III) complexes has been known since the early 1980’s where the C-H bond of methane was activated by three-legged piano stool iridium complexes. Following this seminal work, a plethora complexes of the same nature were prepared, characterized and studied for their reactivity. To add to this body of work, we sought to tune the primary coordination sphere by appending a monoanionic bidentate donor ligand to investigate the possibility of divergent bonding and reactivity. In this work, we have synthesized, fully characterized and provided a scope of reactivity for a set of novel three-legged piano stool complexes of iridium supported by a monoanionic bidentate ligand framework, the pyridyl pyrrole moiety. Using a robust synthetic method capable of providing high yields, the steric and electronic environment of this series of novel complexes can be easily tuned to display a range of diverse reactivity. Further transformations to the coordination environment are capable and facilitated by ligand lability of the pyridyl pyrrole moiety.
