Membranes are finding wide applications ranging from water treatment to catalysis to advanced bio-separations. The development of bioinspired, tunable (single layer and multi-layer assembly in pores) membranes provide added opportunities in permeate flux and separation selectivity control. Traditionally, microfiltration (MF) membrane separations have been performed on the basis of size exclusion, and are typically used for filtration of suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, etc. However, microfiltration membranes (such as, cellulosics, silica, PVDF, polycarbonate) can be functionalized with a variety of reagents. Depending on the types of functionalized groups (such as, chain length, charge of groups, biomolecule, etc.) and number of layers, these microfiltration membranes could be used in applications ranging from separations to enzymatic catalysis. The integration of pollutant degrading enzymes by layered assembly or metal/metal oxide (iron, or bimetallic) nano-particles in microfiltration type membrane pore domain allow catalytic detoxification (for ex, PCBs, TCE) of water through both reductive and oxidative pathways. The presentation will include: (1) incorporation of porins and enzymes in membranes for separations and catalysis, (2) water remediation aspects with functionalized membranes containing nano-metal catalyst, (3) temperature responsive membranes for organics separations.
