Membranes are a critical enabling technology in both biomedical devices like the artificial kidney and in the production of nearly all of the top-selling medicines, most of which are currently monoclonal antibody products.  For example, hemodialysis alone uses upwards of 100 million square meters of hollow fiber membranes every year.  This talk will highlight the key applications of membranes for bioseparations, with a specific focus on the work done by the Zydney research group over the past 30+ years.  This includes pioneering work on membrane plasmapheresis for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, the development of new membranes for the artificial kidney, and the application of membrane systems for the production of monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, and gene therapy products.  Emphasis will be placed on how new advances in membrane science coupled with an improved understanding of the underlying transport phenomena have facilitated the application of membrane technology in both bioprocessing and biomedical systems.<br/>
