The control of solutes - surface interactions is one of the “grand challenges” of today’s Membrane Science. Objectives are many: fouling mitigation, biofouling control, selective capture of proteins, oil-water separation, biocompatibility enhancement, etc. To this aim, techniques are often to graft polymers to, or grow from, the surface, or to manage a vapour or wet phase inversion process to turn a blend of a matrix polymer and of a specific moiety into a functionalized surface.<br/>Polymers used for the surface modification are chosen from a range of polymers known to have limited (PEGMA) or very specific interactions (polyacrylic acid) with target solutes such as proteins<br/>The efficacy of a surface modification is the result of a combination of several parameters, among them some are rarely investigated: i) the grafted density over the surface, ii) the distribution of the grafting density, which we investigated in a previous work [1] iii) the actual interactions between the target solutes and the modified surface in a given set of physicochemical conditions.<br/>Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) is a powerful technique to characterize macromolecular structures at the nanoscale [2] and commonly employed in structural biology to unveil the organization of macromolecules and their interaction [3]. The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate how one can extract information from SAXS spectra on the interactions between proteines and polymers frequently used to functionalize artificial membranes in a context of biomedical applications. A careful analysis of the SAXS spectra allows to sort out study proteins-polymer specific interactions as a function of pH and ionic strength. The structure of the polymers-proteins complexes is computed and a comparison of the simulated SAXS spectra to the experimental ones validates the proposed models.
