Sub-nano cluster catalysts are attractive from the perspective of maximizing the availability of precious metal atoms on the surface, where chemistry happens, however, small clusters tend to be much more susceptible to deactivation by sintering and carbon deposition, compared to larger nanoparticles.  Alloying with base metals/metalloids allows both the catalytic selectivity and thermal stability of the clusters to be tuned.  Experiments with size- and composition-selected PtB, PtSn, and PtGe cluster catalysts will be presented.  The clusters are prepared by first depositing size-selected Pt<sub>n</sub> clusters on the support, and then modifying them by ALD-like processes to deposit the alloying element.  Alkene dehydrogenation, which tends to coke pure Pt cluster catalysts, is used as a test reaction.  Closely coupled experiments and theory are used to unravel the electronic and structural changes that stabilize the clusters and tune the activity.  The different alloying elements reduce the coking tendency, but the mechanism of action appears to be different. <br/>
