Pt-based bimetallic catalysts have showed promising performance in non-oxidative and oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons. Compared with the Pt-based bimetallic alloys where Pt and the second metal are randomly distributed as a solid solution, Pt-based intermetallic alloys such as Pt-Zn, possess finite stoichiometry and ordered atomic structure.1 The well-defined intermetallic structure enables the fine tuning the reaction reactivity, selectivity and catalyst stability by synthesizing various intermetallic phases. In this work, we developed a strategy to synthesize a series of Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles, including Pt, Pt3Zn, Pt1Zn1, and Zn. The SiO2 supported Pt-Zn intermetallic nanoparticles are of 2 – 5 nm and characterized using STEM, BET, XRD, XPS, DRIFTS, ICP, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In particular, in situ Pt L3- and Zn K-edges XAS was used to investigate the formation of Pt-Zn intermetallic alloys under the synthesis conditions, which provides critical information on the changes of oxidation state and phase of materials at elevating temperature. The Pt-Zn based catalysts were evaluated for oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethane using O2. While all the catalysts showed deactivation, the Pt1Zn1 phases showed superior performance to other phases. In situ XAS on both Pt L3- and Zn K-edges revealed that part of the superior performance of Pt1Zn1 can be ascribed to its ability to resist oxidation of Zn under ODH conditions. The delamination of Pt and Zn has been evidenced by the presence of ZnO under the reaction conditions. Further improvement in catalyst performance was achieved by improve the stability of the Pt1Zn1 phases by using atomic layer deposition (ALD).
