We perform a combine theoretical and experimental study of the electrochemical oxidation of methane.  Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations are performed to determine the mechanism of electrochemical methane oxidation. We aim to understand the role electrochemical potential can play in the selectivity of methane oxidation with the goal of determining how to produce partial oxidation products, such as methanol.  This work is combined with experimental results, which quantify the activity of polycrystalline transition metal surfaces for methane oxidation activity. The catalysts are characterized by SEM, EDS, and XPS both pre and post-electrochemical reaction.  The methane oxidation products are determined by GC and HPLC and the product distribution, partial current densities, and Faradaic efficiencies over catalysts is also shown as a part of this work.  This combine study gives insights on how to develop improved catalysts for methane to methanol oxidation. <br/>
