Light alkenes, such as propylene, are key chemical building blocks in our chemical industry, and are currently in part produced by e.g. the selective cracking of crude oil fractions. Tailored production routes of propene, however, would benefit from the direct and selective activation of light alkanes, originating from e.g. shale gas reservoirs. There are a wide variety of solid catalysts (e.g. Cr-, Ga- and Pt-based systems) known to be able to selectively convert propane into propene, although the formation of coke deposits as well as metal sintering behavior often require that the solid catalysts have to be regenerated. This lecture aims to provide an overview of some recent advances on different catalyst systems capable to selectively activate propane, and also describes some new trends in this field of research. One of them is to combine propane dehydrogenation with olefin metathesis. Crux in all these developments are the understanding of the activation and deactivation processes, in which operando spectroscopy methods may help to elucidate the physical chemistry behind these important chemical processes.<br/> <br/> <br/>
